Bank & SSC - Important Vocabulary


Decimate (verb)


Hindi translation: बरबाद कर देना


Meaning: To destroy in large numbers or greatly reduce the strength of something.


Memory tip: Dec (short for December) = The harsh winter decimated the French army in Russia.


Use in Sentence: The Indian Cricket team decimated Pakistan in the World T20 Finals.


 


Exonerate (verb)


Hindi translation: बिमुक्त करना


Meaning: Clear someone from blame for a fault


Memory tip: Ex (previous) + Onerate (honour) = Get back previous honour by freeing from blame. 


Use in Sentence: The judge exonerated Salman Khan of all charges in the hit-and-run case.


 


Squander (verb)


Hindi translation:  अपव्यय करना


Meaning: Waste thoughtlessly


Memory tip: Squid (octopus) + blunder (mistake)


 


Clandestine (adjective)


Hindi translation: गुप्त


Meaning: Secret


Memory Tip: Clan + destine   As the members of the clan were holding secret meetings, the emperor was destined to be overthrown.


 


Suppress (verb)


Hindi translationअंत करना  OR कुचलना


Meaning: Put an end to something by force ORTo curb/restrain


Memory Tip: Suppress  Press down  Put down


 


Gratify (verb)


Hindi translationकृतार्थ करना


Meaning: Give satisfaction


Memory Tip: Gratify rhymes with satisfy


 


Despicable (adjective)


Hindi Translationघिनौना


Meaning: Deserving hatred


Memory Tip: De + spic + able → Not + speak + able  If it is something unspeakable, it means it is despicable.


 


Superficial (adjective)


Hindi translationबाहरी  


Meaning: Only at the surface, appearing to be real.


Memory Tip: Superficial  ऊपर से artificial
